Types of Show Scholarships

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ awards the following scholarships:

Number Awarded: 238 four-year, $18,000, Houston-area

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, an applicant must meet criteria of citizenship, residence, academic standing, college/university enrollment plans, demonstration of leadership, character and economic need. Public school districts eligible to participate within the eight-county area are:

  • Harris County – Aldine, Alief, Channelview, Crosby, Cypress-Fairbanks, Deer Park, Galena Park, Goose Creek, Houston, Huffman, Humble, Katy, Klein, La Porte, North Forest, Pasadena, Sheldon, Spring, Spring Branch, and Tomball
  • Brazoria County – Alvin, Angleton, Brazosport, Columbia-Brazoria, Danbury, Pearland and Sweeny
  • Chambers County – Anahuac, Barbers Hill and East Chambers
  • Fort Bend County – Fort Bend, Lamar Consolidated, Needville and Stafford
  • Galveston County – Clear Creek, Dickinson, Friendswood, Galveston, High Island, Hitchcock, La Marque, Santa Fe and Texas City
  • Liberty County – Cleveland, Dayton, Hardin, Hull-Daisetta, Liberty and Tarkington
  • Montgomery County – Conroe, Magnolia, Montgomery, New Caney, Splendora and Willis
  • Waller County – Hempstead, Royal and Waller

Number Awarded: 114 four-year, $18,000, Houston-area – Of these, 44 are designated for students from the Houston Independent School District. 70 awards will be presented to students attending any of the participating public school districts designated below, including HISD, and students attending an open enrollment charter school in the below counties that has received an exemplary or recognized rating from The Texas Education Agency.

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, an applicant must meet criteria of citizenship, residence, economic need, academic standing, college/university enrollment plans, leadership and character. Public school districts eligible to participate within the eight-county area are:

  • Harris County – Aldine, Alief, Channelview, Crosby, Cypress-Fairbanks, Deer Park, Galena Park, Goose Creek, Houston, Huffman, Humble, Katy, Klein, La Porte, North Forest, Pasadena, Sheldon, Spring, Spring Branch, and Tomball

Students attending open enrollment charter schools rated exemplary or recognized by the Texas Education Agency, and are located in one of the above counties, are eligible to apply.

Number Awarded: 72 four-year, $18,000 college scholarships are presented to outstanding eligible students representing the counties participating in the Show's Area Go Texan program. This includes an additional 10 awards to be given at large to students within the 62 counties represented in the Area Go Texan Scholarship Program.

Eligibility: The applicant must attend a public high school in one of the 62 Area Go Texan counties. The 62 participating Area Go Texan counties are: Anderson, Angelina, Aransas, Austin, Bastrop, Bee, Bell, Bosque, Brazos, Burleson, Caldwell, Calhoun, Cherokee, Colorado, DeWitt, Falls, Fayette, Freestone, Goliad, Gonzales, Gregg, Grimes, Hardin, Harrison, Henderson, Hill, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Karnes, Lavaca, Lee, Leon, Limestone, Live Oak, Madison, Matagorda, McLennan, Milam, Nacogdoches, Navarro, Newton, Nueces, Orange, Panola, Polk, Refugio, Robertson, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, San Patricio, Shelby, Trinity, Tyler, Victoria, Walker, Washington, Wharton and Williamson.

Awards: Presented during the Show at the Area Go Texan Scholarship Banquet in May.

Number Awarded: 70 four-year at $18,000 each, statewide

Applications: Obtained through 4-H from county extension agents, club leaders or the Texas 4-H Foundation, which can be found at texas4-h.tamu.edu.

Deadline: Varies within 4-H district.

Eligibility:

  • Current member of Texas 4-H in good standing
  • Must apply in the spring of senior year
  • Must graduate from a Texas public high school or home school in the school year in which applying for Show scholarships
  • Must be in top one-fourth of graduating class
  • Test scores must meet minimum of 1350 SAT or 19 on the ACT
  • Must be a resident of the state of Texas and a citizen of the United States of America
  • Must have applied to and plan to attend a not-for-profit Texas college or university accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
  • Cannot have applied for a scholarship through Texas FFA or FCCLA
  • Selected applicants also are interviewed in person.
  • There are no restrictions on major field of study.

Selection: Scholarship evaluation committee chosen by Texas 4-H Foundation, usually educators, 4-H leaders, county extension agents.

  • Current member of Texas FFA in good standing; must apply in the spring of senior year
  • Must graduate from a public high school in school year in which applying for Show scholarships
  • Must be in top one-fourth of graduating class
  • Test scores must meet minimum of 1350 SAT or 19 on the ACT
  • Must be a resident of the state of Texas and a citizen of the United States of America
  • Must have applied to and plan to attend a not-for-profit Texas college or university accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
  • Cannot have applied for a scholarship through Texas 4-H or FCCLA.
  • Selected applicants also are interviewed in person.

Selection: A scholarship evaluation committee, chosen by Texas FFA officials, and consisting of agricultural science teachers representing the 10 FFA areas in Texas, evaluates applicants on the criteria of academic ability, FFA involvement and achievement, financial need and leadership.

Number Awarded: 15 four-year, $18,000 college scholarships are awarded to participants in the Show's School Art Program

Eligibility:

  • To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, an applicant must meet criteria of citizenship, character, residence, academic standing, college/university enrollment plans, and economic need, in addition to special eligibility requirements based on the applicant's participation in the School Art Program.
  • High school seniors from participating public high schools whose artwork was judged by School Art Committee judges in a participating school district show or those high school seniors from participating public high schools who are selected to compete in the Quick Draw competition are eligible to receive Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program Scholarship applications.,/li>

Application: Letters of Eligibility will be furnished by the Show's School Art Committee directly to eligible students or to a representative of the participating public high school. The Letter of Eligibility will contain a key-code for School Art students to use to access the online application. Only those students with the key code will be able to apply. 2013 applications are now closed. The 2014 Scholarship Application will be available November 2013.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America

Number Awarded: 10 four-year at $18,000 each, statewide

Applications: Obtained from FCCLA advisor, usually in December of the applicant's senior year; applications originate with Texas FCCLA. Visit www.texasfccla.org for more information.

Deadline: Varies within FCCLA area.

Eligibility:

  • Current member of FCCLA in good standing
  • Must apply in the fall of senior year
  • Must graduate from a public Texas high school in school year in which applying for Show scholarships
  • Must be in top one-fourth of graduating class
  • Test scores must meet minimum of 1350 SAT or 19 ACT
  • Must be a resident of the state of Texas and a citizen of the United States of America
  • Must have applied to and plan to attend a Texas college or university for which applicant meets entrance requirements
  • Cannot have applied for a scholarship through Texas 4-H or FFA.
  • Selected applicants also are interviewed in person.

Selection: Scholarship evaluation committee chosen by Texas FCCLA, usually community and industry leaders.

In Memory of Mrs. Ruth Hildebrand

Number Awarded: one four-year, $18,000 scholarship to an exhibitor in the Junior Market Lamb Show.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be Junior Market Lamb Show exhibitors participating in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States, of good character and meet all requirements as specified in the application, including their attending a Texas public high school, meeting academic and standardized test score minimums.
  • Applicants must plan to attend a college or university within the state of Texas.
  • Applicants are evaluated on the basis of academics, leadership/community involvement and financial need.

Application: Letters of Eligibility will be furnished to county agents and agricultural science teachers. The Letter of Eligibility will contain a key code for lamb show exhibitors to access the online application. Only those students with the key code will be able to apply. Applicants will be interviewed in March. 2013 applications are now closed. The 2014 Scholarship Application will be available November 2013.

Awards: The recipient will be announced during the Lamb Show.

Number Awarded: five four-year at $18,000 each

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, an applicant must be a dependent of a service member in active duty, reserve, honorably discharged veteran or the National Guard. Applicant must also meet criteria of citizenship, residence, academic standing, college/university enrollment plans, demonstration of leadership, character and economic need. Eligible applicants must live in the eight surrounding Houston Metropolitan counties or the 62 participating Area Go Texan counties.

Number Awarded: 10 two-year at $8,000 each, statewide

Requirement: Students must pursue an associate's degree in an approved technical field. Five scholarships will be given priority to student’s who participated in the Show's Agricultural Mechanics Project Show or the Tractor Technician Contest Finals.

Eligibility: The applicant must:

  • Participate in an interview process.
  • Have made formal application to enroll with intent to attend a not-for-profit Texas college or university accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and participate in a curriculum leading to an associate's degree.
  • Applicant may not receive more than $40,000 in other financial aid, excluding the Show scholarship.

Number Awarded: Juniors – 50 two-year at $16,000 each; Seniors – 50 one-year at $8,000 each

Eligibility:

  • To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, an applicant must be a current Show scholar and must be considered a junior by university hour requirements the semester following application. Student must also meet criteria of citizenship, character, residence, academic standing and economic need.
  • Additional information will be posted once available.

Application: Applications will be available in mid-April 2013.
